Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring, soft, sedimentary rock that is composed of the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of microscopic algae. It is commonly found in deposits around the world and is often processed into a fine powder. Diatomaceous earth powder has various industrial, commercial, agricultural, and household applications due to its unique properties. Here's an overview of diatomaceous earth powder:

Formation and Composition: Diatoms are single-celled algae that have silica-based cell walls called frustules. Over time, these frustules accumulate in aquatic environments and form deposits. Diatomaceous earth is composed primarily of silica, with varying levels of other minerals depending on its source and processing.

Properties:

  • Porosity: Diatomaceous earth is highly porous due to the intricate structure of the diatom frustules. This porosity gives it a high surface area, which contributes to its absorptive properties.
  • Abrasive: The fine particles of diatomaceous earth have an abrasive quality that makes it useful for various cleaning and polishing applications.
  • Inert Nature: Diatomaceous earth is chemically inert, meaning it does not react with other substances. This makes it safe for various uses.

Uses:

  1. Pest Control: Diatomaceous earth is often used as a natural insecticide and pest control agent. The fine powder damages the exoskeleton of insects, leading to dehydration and death. It is commonly used for controlling pests like ants, cockroaches, bedbugs, and fleas.

  2. Filtration: Due to its porosity, diatomaceous earth is used as a filtering agent in various industries, including food and beverage processing, water treatment, and pool filtration. It can effectively remove fine particles and impurities from liquids.

  3. Absorbent: Diatomaceous earth's absorptive properties make it suitable for absorbing liquids, including oils, chemicals, and spills. It is sometimes used in spill cleanup and industrial spill containment.

  4. Agriculture: In agriculture, diatomaceous earth is used as an insecticide and soil conditioner. It can help control pests, improve soil structure, and enhance water retention.

  5. Personal Care: Some personal care products, such as toothpaste and facial scrubs, contain diatomaceous earth due to its mild abrasive qualities.

  6. Food and Feed Additive: Food-grade diatomaceous earth is approved for use as a food additive to prevent caking and clumping in dry food products.

  7. Health Supplements: Food-grade diatomaceous earth is also consumed as a dietary supplement due to its potential benefits for digestive health, although these claims are often debated.

Manganese(II) chloride is the dichloride salt of manganese, MnCl2. This inorganic chemical exists in the anhydrous form, as well as the dihydrate (MnCl2·2H2O) and tetrahydrate MnCl2·4H2O), with the tetrahydrate being the most common form. Like many Mn(II) species, these salts are pink, with the paleness of the color being characteristic of transition metal complexes with high spin d5 configurations.

Ammonium carbonate is a salt with the chemical formula (NH4)2CO3. Since it readily degrades to gaseous ammonia and carbon dioxide upon heating, it is used as a leavening agent and also as smelling salt. It is also known as baker's ammonia and was a predecessor to the more modern leavening agents baking soda and baking powder.

Zinc borate is an inorganic compound, a borate of zinc. It is a white crystalline or amorphous powder insoluble in water. Its toxicity is low. Its melting point is 980 °C.Zinc borate is primarily used as a flame retardant in plastics and cellulose fibers, paper, rubbers and textiles. It is also used in paints, adhesives, and pigments. As a flame retardant, it can replace antimony(III) oxide as a synergist in both halogen-based and halogen-free systems.[2] It is an anti-dripping and char-promoting agent, and suppresses the afterglow. In electrical insulator plastics it suppresses arcing and tracking.

Zinc borate is used in polyvinyl chloride, polyolefins, polyamides, epoxy resins, polyesters, thermoplastic elastomers, rubbers, etc. It is also used in some intumescent systems.[4]

Zinc borate has synergistic effect with zinc phosphate or barium borate as a corrosion inhibitor pigment.
